Wisconsin showing interest in Virginia Tech big man John Ojiako
In search of a replacement for the minutes vacated by Chris Vogt, I’ve been told that the Badgers have expressed interest in Virginia Tech transfer John Ojiako.
The 6-foot-10, 245-pound center has appeared in 57 games over the last three seasons at Virginia Tech, with career averages of 2.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks in just over eight minutes per game. It’s also worth noting that Ojiako shot over 59% from the floor, and nearly 82% from the charity stripe this past season.
According to Sports Reference, Ojiako’s per 40 minutes statistics would extrapolate to 15.0 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game.
Per 247sports, the former three-star recruit was the No. 246 overall prospect in the 2019 recruiting class, the No. 52 PF in the country, and the No. 22 player in the state of Florida.
The former Hokie has battled injuries throughout his collegiate career, and has failed to establish a consistent role within the program because of it.
Ojiako is a player with a skill-set that greatly differs from your traditional Wisconsin big men. He’s an athletic rim-runner that has all of the physical tools to impact games with his length as a shot-blocker, and rebounder if given a consistent role.
The Virginia Tech transfer has two seasons of eligibility remaining and would make for an intriguing addition as a rotational big man that can protect the rim, and provide a spark off the bench.
This one is worth keeping an eye on, I've been told the staff is doing their homework here and potentially trying to get Ojiako on campus for a visit.
